Prisoner Costume – You Won’t Be Doing Hard Time Finding A Fun Costume This Halloween
There is always a dilemma when it comes to picking your Halloween costume. Do you go for something completely off the wall and original so that everyone can admire your clever idea or do you go for something that everyone ‘gets’ immediately they see it.
The clever idea is, well, clever but you probably have to explain what you are, which kind of gets a bit dull after the 24th time. The idea that everyone gets might have been done before and there may even be other people dressed in the same costume, but everyone knows who you are or what you are trying to be.
The prisoner costume is firmly in the latter case as far a costumes go. It is such a well known costume that it’s almost a stereotype but it is sure to create heaps of fun at a Halloween party or any fancy dress party for that matter.
In fact you may be surprised at the range of prisoner costumes that are available these days. And the good folks that make fancy dress costumes have added their own little sparks of creativity to the outfit too. The costumes fit into three styles I would say. So here are a few prison costumes for you to look at.
There is the original convict wear that everyone associates with prisons. You know, the stripy costume that you see on the go to jail square on the monopoly board. It generally comprises a pair of pants, a long sleeve shirt and a cap, all in black and white stripes. You may have your prisoner number on the shirt too. You can add accessories, if that’s the right word, to the costume too. So you need a ball and chain or even hand restraints/shackles.
Another popular and more modern prisoner costume is the jumpsuit. Let’s call it the penitentiary jumpsuit which seems to come in one color – orange. This is a very simple costume so if you don’t like to really dress up this might suit you. Some jumpsuit costumes come with various prints on the suit, like the number or words like “busted” to leave no one in any doubt about what you are.
You can even accessorize the jumpsuit costume too. The standard hand restraints can add to the look, but if you really want to be a villain then how about getting a Hannibal Lecter mask. This will really scare people without being too over the top. Just what you need for an understated Halloween costume.
The third variety of costumes are basically fun, flirty or sexy costumes in the theme of prison outfits. These are mainly for women and feature short, body hugging outfits with black and white stripes on them. They go by names like “jail bait” and “frisky Felon” to highlight the flirty tone of the outfit.
Prisons would be awfully more crowded than they already are if the inmates wore these kind of suits !
Kids are catered for too, although wouldn’t it be giving your child the wrong idea to dress them in a convict suit ? Well I guess it is trick or treat so maybe you can let it ride for a night.
Pets can also be convicts for a night too.
